When the sound is what you want
Many Shorts are built around audio: a trending track, a voice line everyone quotes, a sound you want for your own edit. This page takes the link of a Short or any short YouTube clip and gives you only the audio as an MP3 file. Just the sound, ready for any music app.
How to get the MP3
- Copy the link of the Short or video: Share, then Copy link.
- Paste it into the URL box. The format menu already shows MP3.
- Tap Download. A progress bar shows the work.
- When the card says "Download ready", tap Download on it to save the MP3.
With a 93-second Short, this took about 22 seconds in our test.
Ideas for clip audio
- Ringtones and alerts: cut a few seconds from the MP3 with a free editor and set it as your ringtone.
- Your own edits: use the sound of your own Shorts in a new video, a slideshow or a story.
- Learning: keep a short language lesson or a pronunciation clip to replay with the screen off.
- Practice tracks: keep the music of a dance or workout clip to train with offline.
- Memories: save the audio of a short concert clip you filmed and uploaded.
About the file
The MP3 files in our tests were 320 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz, with the clip's thumbnail as cover art. A 90-second clip makes a file of roughly 4 MB, small enough to send in a chat or by e-mail.
Short clips often mix music with talking or effects. The MP3 contains the full sound track as it is in the video; the tool does not separate voice and music.
Making a ringtone on Android
Save the MP3, open it in a free audio cutter app, mark the best five to thirty seconds and store that part as a new file. Then open Settings, go to Sound (on some phones Sound and vibration), choose Ringtone and pick the new file. Menu names differ a little between phone makers, but the steps stay the same.
Sound quality of short clips
Many Shorts are filmed on phones in loud places. The MP3 keeps the sound as it is, including wind or crowd noise. If you want a cleaner result for an edit, the free noise filter in Audacity often helps a lot.
Short clip, short wait
Because Shorts and clips are short, the conversion finishes quickly. Keep this tab open until the result card appears, then save. If nothing happens after a minute, check that the link is public and paste it again.
Prefer the video?
Use the Shorts downloader to keep an upright clip as MP4. For landscape clips, open YouTube to MP4. All options are on the start page.
Clip audio FAQ
Does this work with Shorts links?
Yes. Paste a link with "/shorts/" in it; no changes are needed.
How big is the MP3 of a one-minute clip?
About 2.5 MB at 320 kbps. That fits easily into a chat message.
Can I get only a part of the clip?
The MP3 holds the whole clip. Trim it afterwards in an app such as Audacity or a phone audio editor.
Can I use the MP3 as a ringtone on iPhone?
That depends on your iOS version. Older versions need the M4R format and a detour through GarageBand or a computer, so check the Sounds settings of your iPhone first. Most Android phones accept MP3 ringtones directly.
Is the MP3 good enough for a video edit?
For a background track, yes. If you plan heavy editing, keep the MP4 as well, so you can go back to the original sound.
